POLICY BRIEF: The last government employee pay cut

Since COVID-19 emerged in Canada, news outlets reported on businesses struggling in many sectors and reducing employee pay as a result.
 
As we hadn’t seen any stories about governments implementing pay reductions, this prompted SecondStreet.org to investigate – when the last time was that governments reduced employee pay? This policy brief examines the issue of pay reductions in government, and includes details of pay reductions (or lack thereof) at the federal government, provincial governments and 13 major cities.
